PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers baseball had its 16-game home winning streak snapped with a 13-4 loss to Ohio State Friday at Bainton Field. It was the first home Big Ten game for the Scarlet Knights.
RU is now 7-15 for the season and 2-2 in the Big Ten, while OSU is 17-6 and 3-1. Rutgers had won its last four games heading into the weekend.
Senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) collected three hits for the second consecutive game to lead Rutgers offensively, hitting his second home run of the season. Sophomore Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.) also recorded his first multiple-hit game of the year with a single and a double. Rutgers registered eight hits on the day.
On the mound, junior Mark McCoy (Barnegat, N.J.) (0-5) took the loss in his debut at Bainton Field. Sophomore Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) followed with three innings of relief, with sophomore Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) and junior David Yakopec (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combining for the eighth inning. Senior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) struck out one in a scoreless frame.
Ohio State struck first with two runs on three hits in the third. Rutgers then loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with no outs, but came away empty. The momentum continued for the Buckeyes into the next frame, as seven runs (six earned) came across to make it 9-0.
The Scarlet Knights dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Zarrillo slammed his second home run of the season to the opposite way. It was his third career long ball and first at Bainton Field.
Rutgers would add a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.), driving home senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.). Then in the seventh, RU plated two on three hits. Folinusz doubled to start and freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) walked to put two aboard for sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.), who roped an RBI single to right. Freeman then scored on an RBI fielder's choice by D'Annunzio.
Tanner Tully (2-1) earned the win for Ohio State with three earned runs allowed over seven innings. Pat Border drove in four for the visitors at the plate.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. from Bainton Field. Junior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) will make the start for the Scarlet Knights, as the game will be broadcast live on BTN Plus and WRSU.
