BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Rutgers baseball rallied back from a 4-0 deficit, but suffered a narrow 5-4 loss to Indiana Sunday at Bart Kaufman Field. The Scarlet Knights collected 11 hits in the game offensively and did not go down in order in any inning during the game.
Senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) had a productive day for RU with a double, a single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt, while junior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) produced two singles, a walk and two RBIs. Senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) added two hits. It was the 13th time this season the Scarlet Knights picked up double-digit hits.
On the mound, sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) (1-3) allowed two earned runs over five innings, but took the loss as the defense allowed three unearned runs behind him. Sophomore Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) followed and provided two-plus innings of scoreless relief, with senior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) stranding two inherited runners in an inning of work to keep it a one-run game.
The Hoosiers (11-23, 5-6) jumped ahead in the first inning on home run by Casey Rodrigue and took advantage of two RU errors to plate two more. The home lead grew to 4-0 in the third on another unearned run.
Rosa was able to nail a runner at home on an attempted safety squeeze in the bottom of the fourth, keeping it at a four-run deficit.
That led to the fifth where the Scarlet Knights (11-23, 5-7) rallied to tie the game with four runs and three hits. Sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) led it off with a single through the right side and Zarrillo walked to put two aboard. Looking to bunt, junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) was struck by a pitch to load the bases. Following a force play at home for the first out, sophomore Chris Folinusz (Cranford, N.J.) came up as a pinch hitter and delivered an RBI single to make it a 4-1 game. Next up, Devish lined a two-run single to right-center, with sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) sliding into safely right before the tag. Junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) fell into a two-strike count, but battled back to ground a ball to second base with the infield in to plate Folinusz as the tying run.
However, Indiana responded with a run on three hits in the next half inning to take a 5-4 lead. The go-ahead run scored on a two-out single by Will Nolden.
Rutgers did load the bases with one out in the sixth, but a double play ball ended the threat. In the ninth, Devish worked a 10-pitch walk before a lineout ended the game. RU was doomed by 14 runners stranded on base overall after having a hit in seven different innings.
Kyle Hart (1-0) earned the win in relief for IU, as Ryan Halstead recorded his seventh save with a scoreless ninth. Christian Morris made the emergency start due to injury and the Hoosiers used six pitchers overall.
Rutgers will return to action Tuesday with a 3:35 p.m. game at Lafayette. The next Big Ten series will start Friday at Bainton Field versus Michigan State.
