Apr 29 | Softball

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (April 29, 2015) -- Behind solid pitching in the circle and consistent offense, the Rutgers softball team shutout Iona, 10-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Walsh Field.
The Scarlet Knights improved to an overall record of 28-17 and conclude the regular season undefeated in midweek matchups with a 10-0 mark. The Gaels fell to an overall mark of 14-23 on the year.
Rutgers plated one in the top of the first to claim an early 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) took control of the circle from the onset, registering a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the frame.
RU extended its lead to 3-0, adding a run in the third and fourth innings. Maddox surrendered only one hit to the Gaels across the first five innings of work to keep the advantage in the Scarlet Knights' favor.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) took over in the circle for RU. Landrith retired all three batters she faced, stranding an inherited runner on first to end the inning.
Following a hit from junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) to lead off the top of the seventh, senior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) crushed her 21st home run of the season to bring in two runs. Rutgers kept the rally rolling, plating two more runs via a double from Slowinski and an Iona miscue.
Huang then registered her third triple of the season, sending in two more runners to extend RU's lead to 9-0. Whitley capped things off with an RBI single to send Huang home, giving the Scarlet Knights a 10-0 edge.
Landrith worked a 1-2-3 inning to seal the shutout for RU and to pick up the save. Dresden Maddox was credited with the win to bring her overall record to 8-5.
Up next, Rutgers concludes its regular season slate, hosting Wisconsin for a weekend series beginning Friday, May 1. Saturday's contest of the three-game series marks Senior Day for RU as the program honors seniors Chandler Howard (North Wilmington, Del.), Bates and Landrith. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
