URBANA, ILL. (April 5, 2015) -- The Rutgers women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Illinois on Sunday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center.
The Fighting Illini jumped to a 1-0 lead by claiming the team doubles point to open the match. The pair of senior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and junior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) fell by the margin of 8-2 to their opponents at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 1 spot, Fighting Illini Melissa Kopinski and Louise Kwong defeated junior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) and freshman Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) by a mark of 8-2.
In the singles matchups, Balsamo put up a strong fight against Louise Kwong. The senior edged her opponent through each set, but ultimately was topped by the close margins of 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Rutgers remains on the road with a trip to Purdue on Saturday, April 11. The Scarlet Knights then wrap up their regular season slate the following day with a match at Indiana.
