Freshnock Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2015) - Rutgers field hockey junior back Devon Freshnock was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday in the first weekly awards of the 2015 season. The Middletown, N.J. native anchored the Rutgers defense as it held opponents to just one goal in the first two games of the year, earning a 3-1 victory over Bucknell Friday before shutting out Ball State 4-0 Saturday.
"The coaching staff and team are incredibly proud of Devon for receiving this honor," head coach Meredith Civico said. "She has worked incredibly hard in the offseason to develop her game. It's exciting to see her performing so well this early in the season."
Freshnock also contributed at the offensive end, scoring one goal and adding an assist in the game against the Cardinals. It was the first multi-point game of her career, and she has already tied her career-highs in goals (one) and assists (one), while setting a new career-high with three points on the season.
This is the first weekly award that Rutgers field hockey has won as members of the Big Ten Conference. The last Scarlet Knight to earn a Player of the Week award was goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes, who was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7, 2013.
Rutgers schedule continues this weekend with a matchup against No. 9 Virginia on Friday at 3 p.m. The game will be live-streamed on BTN Plus. It will also be the Scarlet Lottery Game, as students will have the opportunity to earn points towards football tickets when the Scarlet Knights host the Cavaliers.
