EVANSTON, Ill. – Coming off a Friday win over No. 6 Iowa, Rutgers field hockey then battled on the road against No. 2 Northwestern on Sunday. The Scarlet Knights took the Wildats down to the wire, where a goal with under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter gave Northwestern a 2-1 win over the Scarlet Knights at Lakeside Field.

With the win, Northwestern improved to 16-1 overall and 7-0 in the Big Ten, clinching at least a share of the Big Ten title. The Scarlet Knights saw their five game winning streak end, falling to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten. Northwestern now leads the all-time series 14-5 over RU, winning their sixth straight in the series after RU won five games over ranked Northwestern teams between 2018 and 2022.

Rutgers goal in the game came from Talia Schenck. Emily Nicholls made three saves in the game. Shots were 7-4 in favor of Northwestern, who also had a 4-2 advantage in corners.

Rutgers scored first in the game, tallying on their first shot of the day. It was a great lunging shot taken by Talia Schenck, finding enough space to get around the defense to find an opening to launch one into the net. The Scarlet Knights took that lead halfway through the opening quarter.

The Wildcats later equalized with a great play and finish. NU sent a pass into the circle that was deflected and bounced around, then Kiera Sack corralled it and worked space around a defender to finish the goal and equalize.

The Scarlet Knights continued to press for a goal, and while they would not find one, the team put forth a tremendous effort against the nation's second highest ranked team, playing them evenly throughout.

Ultimately, Northwestern earned a corner with the seconds on the clock waning down and capitalized on it. Ilse Tromp put in her team-leading 12^th goal with a strong shot from off the stick-stop at the top of the circle to give Northwestern the victory.

Rutgers has one regular season game remaining. The Scarlet Knights will host Indiana next Friday, October 30, in a noon game to close out the regular season. The team then heads to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Tournament, which starts on Wednesday, November 4. s
