Field Hockey Wins in Penalty Shootout At Ohio State
Oct 09 | Field Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio ā Rutgers field hockey grabbed a Big Ten road win on Friday afternoon, defeating Ohio State by a 3-2 final after taking a penalty shootout. The Scarlet Knights have won 10 straight games against the Buckeyes.
With the win, Rutgers earned its first Big Ten win of the season and improved to 7-6 overall. RU now leads Ohio State 13-6 in the all-time series and have won the last four games in Columbus. OSU dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in league play.
It was RU's third game this season to reach overtime and the sixth time since 2018 that RU and Ohio State played into extra time. Anna Cogdell and Olivia Fraticelli scored for RU in regulation. Fraticelli's 22nd career goal tied Rachel Yaney (2013-2016) for ninth all-time in RU history.
A tightly contested game, Ohio State led 15-14 in shots. Corners were 7-3 in favor of RU. Emily Nicholls made four saves for RU. Rutgers led 2-0, but OSU came back with the next two scores, and the teams were even through an overtime period before the Scarlet Knights claimed the shootout win.
The initial quarter was tight, with just one shot and remained scoreless through the first 15 minutes. In the second quarter, RU used an early challenge and after a review they were validated and awarded a penalty corner.
RU then earned a second corner, and took advantage of it for the early advantage. Rutgers inserted and stopped the ball at the top for Anna Cogdell, who launched in a short into the top of the net to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 advantage. The junior, who scored three goals across her first two seasons at RU, put home her fifth goal of this season, with assists for Frederique Vernooij and Talia Schenck on the true corner. That would be lone first half goal, with RU taking the advantage into intermission.
The Scarlet Knights quickly doubled their advantage to start the third quarter. In the first 30 seconds, Rutgers forced a turnover on the Ohio State side of the field. RU quickly took the ball in where Olivia Fraticelli beat two defenders and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Ohio State got their first goal with RU down a player after a green card. Ohio State's Sienna Golden put the goal in, as OSU's leading scorer cut into open space and redirected a long pass into the circle into the goal.
Then, in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, Ohio State was awarded a penalty stroke. The call was upheld after a video review and then OSU snuck the penalty stroke home into the corner to even the score at 2-2.
The team's continued their tight battle down the stretch. Neither team could find the winner in regulation, with RU heading into overtime for the third time this season.
The overtime period opened up with a trio of RU corner opportunities, but they could not convert. Still no scoring would be found, sending the game to a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Rutgers dominated to take the victory. All three Rutgers shooters converted, with Olivia Fraticelli, Anna Cogdell and Talia Schenck all scored on their attempts. On the other side, Emily Nicholls kept OSU off
the board entirely, halting all three of their attempts to seal the win for the visitors.
