Field Hockey Runs Over La Salle in the Rain

PISCATAWAY, N.J. ā With the second day of a powerful Nor'easter storm pelting New Jersey, Rutgers and La Salle battled through the rain at the Bauer Complex on Sunday afternoon. The game was all Scarlet Knights as Rutgers pounded La Salle in a 5-0 victory. The Scarlet Knights improved to 5-5 on the season as they outshot La Salle 30-1 on the day, dropping the Explorers to 3-6 overall.
The Scarlet Knights saw 20 players get game action in the contest. RU also held an 8-0 advantage on corners. RU is now 18-2-1 all-time against La Salle dating back to 1975.
Talia Schenck scored two goals and had an assist to lead RU with five points as she had her first goals as a Scarlet Knights. Martha Goodridge, Olivia Fraticelli and Maddie Kidd all had goals for RU. Emily Nicholls turned aside the lone shot attempt by the visitors.
Schenck gave RU the 1-0 lead early in the second quarter. She beat the defense and launched a hard shot in from the top of the circle.
Fraticelli followed just six minutes later with her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Fraticelli intercepted a pass in the circle and then roofed a shot for a 2-0 lead. She has 18 goals over her last 22 games played in the last two years.
Martha Goodridge had the third goal for RU. Maddie Kidd inserted the corner to her, and Goodridge launched home a shot to give RU a 3-0 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, RU added two more to its ledger. First it was Schenck again, putting in her second goal of the game. Then, she found Kidd in a 2-on-1 in on the goal, as the home team closed out the 5-0 final margin.
Rutgers is back home for two games next weekend. On Friday, Rutgers hosts Penn State at 3 pm for the Blackout Game in the first Big Ten home game this season. On Sunday, American visits for a noon game.
