COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rutgers field hockey battled against the second ranked team on the road, falling to No. 2 Maryland in the Big Ten Conference opener. The Terps claimed a 3-0 win over Rutgers to improve to 9-0 on the season. The Scarlet Knights now stand at 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten. All of RU's losses this season have come against ranked teams.

UM is now outscoring opponents on the year by a 30-4 margin with six shutouts. Maryland now holds a 39-5-1 advantage in the all-time series as RU was unable to earn its first ever road win at Maryland.

Maryland had the advantage in shots (19-8) and corners (8-2). Emily Nicholls made three saves for RU.

In the opening quarter, the home team had a 5-1 advantage in shots. A great defensive play kept the game scoreless as Samantha Arnold came up with a big defensive save, getting her stick on a long shot towards the open part of the goal from Babs Van Hest to keep the Terps off the board.

Maryland got on the board first. The Terps created on a turnover to create offense and capitalized on an unlucky break for RU. The ball found a Terps player in some open space on the field to put home a shot for a 1-0 lead midway though the second quarter.

In the third quarter, RU's defense killed off a five-minute player disadvantage with a yellow card. Maryland continued to put pressure on the RU net, but of their first 12 shots, just three were on goal.

The Scarlet Knights continued to press for an equalizer. In the final minute of the third, RU had a great RU and chance in front, but the redirection attempt on a cross from the wing couldn't connect. On the countering possession, Maryland earned a corner, and the Terps fired home a shot from the top for a goal in the final seconds of the third quarter, taking a two-goal lead.

Maryland added a third goal with six minutes to play. After a penalty corner, RU halted a series of attempts from the Terps, but the home team finally snuck the ball in for an insurance tally.
