Field Hockey Outlasts American for 150th Career Win for Meredith Civico
Oct 04 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. ā Rutgers field hockey earned a non-conference victory on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Bauer. The Scarlet Knights earned a 4-2 win over American, improving to 6-6 on the season. RU ran out to a 3-0 lead and then held off a late charge from the visitors for the 4-2 victory.
With the win, Rutgers field hockey head coach Meredith Civico earned her 150th career win as the head coach of Rutgers. The team celebrated their coach with flowers and a ceremonial Gatorade bath after the victory.
Captain Sophie Kuiper had her first two goals of the season for RU, while Olivia Fraticelli also scored twice. Fraticelli had her third multi-goal game of the year to lead the squad with 10 goals. Fraticelli's 21 career goals now rank 10th all-time in program history.Ā
Rutgers outshot American, 14-10. The Scarlet Knights had to defend against 12 American corners, with Emily Nicholls making four saves. Caroline DeKenipp, Frederique Vernoiij and Sophie Kuiper all had assists for RU.
The home team took the lead early on, scoring just 1:04 into the contest. A quick feed from Vernooij and finish from Fraticelli put RU ahead early for a lead they would never relinquish.
Kuiper scored her first of the season off a feed from Caroline DeKenipp late in the opening half. Then early in the second half, Kuiper scored again, and RU led 3-0 after 35 minutes.
American would not relent and added two late goals in the fourth quarter. Suddenly, the Eagles had cut the margin to one goal with five minutes to play. Fraticelli then scored her second goal of the day, an insurance tally in the final minute for the 4-2 final margin.
Rutgers is back in action next weekend with one road game. The Scarlet Knights will play at Ohio State on Friday.
