Field Hockey Heads to Ohio State for Friday Game
Oct 07 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers field hockey has a one-game weekend upcoming. The Scarlet Knights will head to Columbus to play at Ohio State. The game, which will be live streamed on B1G+, is this Friday at 1 pm. Brendan Gulick and Doreena Beebe will be on the call.
About Rutgers
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 1-1 weekend, dropping a 1-0 Big Ten contest to Penn State on Friday, then earning a 4-2 win over American on Sunday. The victory over American was the 150th win in the head coaching career of Meredith Civico at Rutgers.
Rutgers stands at 6-6 on the year, looking for their first Big Ten win. RU is 25th in the RPI, a product of having the 12th hardest strength of schedule in the nation. Five of their six losses have come to ranked foes and three of those against top-five ranked foes at the time (No. 18 Monmouth, No. 5 Virginia, No. 4 Princeton, No. 10 UConn and No. 2 Maryland). Rutgers also boasts a win over then-No. 12 Syracuse.
Olivia Fraticelli had her third multi-goal game of the season with two tallies against American. She also scored twice against Albany and three times against Wagner. She now leads the team with 10 goals on the season. Fraticelli also led RU in goals last season with 11. After scoring zero goals in the first 22 games of her career, she now has 20 goals in her last 26 games played.
In Rutgers' record books, Fraticelli's 21 career goals are tied for 10th all-time with Elizabeth McGuire, Nicole Wilson and Melissa Schepacarter. She can tie Rachel Yaney (2013-16) for ninth with one more goal and tie former teammate Guillermina Cuasarano (2021-24) for eight with two more goals. She needs two more goals to record a new career-high and tie for seventh most goals for a RU player in a single season.
Rutgers' 32 goals on the year sees seven players with multiple goals. Behind Fraticelli is Laura Loycke (five) and Anna Cogdell (four). Two upperclassmen, captain Sophie Kuiper and fifth year transfer Talia Schenck each had their first goals of the season with two goals each on each of the past two Sundays.
In goal, Emily Nicholls holds a 1.64 goals-against-average. She has 52 saves with a .712 save percentage. She is first in the Big Ten at 4.33 saves per game.
About Ohio State
Ohio State enters the game with a 4-7 record on the year and 0-3 in Big Ten play. OSU has lost five straight. Ohio State previously came to Piscataway this year, not facing RU but competing in the Big Ten / ACC Challenge at RU. There, the Buckeyes earned their biggest win of the season with a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Virginia. Ohio State has the fourth hardest strength of schedule currently in the nation and the toughest for any Big Ten team.
Sierra Golden leads the team with five goals. OSU also features returning First Team All-Big Ten selection Katie Fichtner in her fifth collegiate season. OSU has two goalies to appear in at least eight games, with Maddie Stevens (2.26 goals-against-average) and Avery Alleva (2.21 goals-against-average).
