PISCATAWAY, N.J. ā Rutgers field hockey goalkeeper Emily Nicholls was named the Big Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Nicholls was a standout performer for the Scarlet Knights as she backstopped RU to a victory over No. 6 Iowa on Friday with an exceptional effort.
Nicholls kept Rutgers alive in a thrilling overtime victory against No. 6 Iowa. As the Hawkeyes peppered RU with 30 shots, Nicholls made 16 saves, many of them of the highlight-reel variety, including a diving save on a penalty stroke attempt in overtime. Ā
Nicholls' 16 saves are the most for any Rutgers goalkeeper since at least 2012, with single game records dating back to the beginning of the Meredith Civico era. The 16 stops are the most for any Big Ten goalkeeper this season and the most for any Big Ten goalkeeper since 2024. It was her second career game of 13+ saves, the only RU goalkeeper in the last 10 years to have multiple games of 13+ saves.
Nicholls has 77 saves on the season, making 24.6% of her season total of saves this weekend as RU battled on the road against two top-6 ranked teams (No. 6 Iowa and No. 2 Northwestern). Nicholls now ranks second in the Big Ten in saves per game (4.53). She holds a 72.0% save percentage and 1.60 goals-against-average on the year.
Nicholls is the fifth different Scarlet Knight to win a Big Ten weekly award this season. She joins Anna Cogdell (Co-Defensive), Olivia Fraticelli (Co-Offensive), Eden Doucelin (Freshman) and Lauren Iaccio (Freshman).
Rutgers closes out the regular season this weekend. The Scarlet Knights host Indiana this Friday at noon.
