Tennis Delivers 5-2 Victory over Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2016) - The Rutgers tennis team (3-2) secured a 5-2 victory over Army (7-3) Saturday afternoon in West Point, N.Y. The Scarlet Knights delivered five victories in singles action to collect their second-straight road win.
Senior Gina Li (Hillsborough) contributed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Carolyn Pitman in No. 1 singles, her second-straight win in singles play. Sophomore Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) also had a strong outing, registering a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rugile Valuniate in the No. 2 position.
Three other Scarlet Knights contributed singles victories on Saturday. In No. 3 singles, junior Ksenija Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) triumphed over Eva Sung, 6-1, 6-4, to add her third singles victory of the season. Senior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) had a 7-5, 6-3 decision against Genevieve McCormick, while sophomore Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) produced a hard-fought, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-8 win.
For the first time this season, Rutgers did not capture the doubles point, as the Black Knights won in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. In No. 3 doubles, Cunningham and senior Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) defeated Gabriella Spindler and Nancy Porter, 7-5.
The Scarlet Knights return to the East Brunswick Racquet Club next week with a pair of home matches. RU hosts in-state foe NJIT on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 12:30 p.m., followed by its first Big Ten action of the season against Maryland at noon on Sunday, Feb. 28.
