Tennis Wins Home Opener against Binghamton

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Feb. 5, 2016) - The Rutgers tennis team won its home opener Friday afternoon, defeating Binghamton, 4-3, at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights captured the doubles point and saw singles victories from senior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.), junior Kesenija Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) and sophomore Lee Levy (Haifa, Israel) to hold on to the win.
"It's always great to get your first win and to get it done at home," said head coach Ben Bucca. "The ladies are feeling good that they got the team victory, but they know they have to continue to work hard and really build ourselves to play strong, competitive tennis when it counts the most."
The Scarlet Knights saw strong play in doubles, winning two matches to secure the doubles point. In the No. 1 spot, Li and senior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) delivered a convincing 6-3 victory over BU's Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro. RU also produced a win in the No. 3 position, as senior Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and junior Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) landed a victory over the Bearcats' Annie DiMuro and Sara Kohtz, 6-3.
Li delivered a convincing win over Kohtz in No. 1 singles, downing her opponent, 6-2, 6-3. Tihomirova won her match in the No. 3 position, 6-0, 7-5, against Binghamton's Agatha Ambrosy, while Levy downed Paulina Tafler, 6-3, 6-3.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when the Scarlet Knights travel to play Princeton an noon. The match will be the first of three-straight road contests for RU, which also includes trips to Seton Hall (Feb. 14) and Army (Feb. 20).
