Tennis Succumbs to No. 50 Indiana, 6-1

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Competing in its first home outdoor match since the 2014 season, Rutgers women's tennis (6-8, 0-4 Big Ten) fell to No. 50 Indiana (12-4, 2-0 Big Ten), 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the RU Tennis Complex.
It marked the first spring match at the RU Tennis Complex for the Scarlet Knights since April 13, 2014, when they defeated St. John's, 6-1.
Senior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) produced RU's first Big Ten individual victory of the season against the Hoosiers, downing Madison Appel in three sets during their No. 1 singles bout. After falling behind in the first set, 3-6, Li battled back with a convincing 6-2 win in the second set. Li then collected a tight 7-6 (4) third set victory to secure the match. Li now leads the team with eight singles victories this season.
Sophomore Lee Levy (Haifa, Israel) also brought her singles match to the deciding third set. Falling behind in the first stanza to Danielle Wolf, Levy rallied back with a 6-1 victory in set two. Wolf would hold on for the win with a 6-1 triumph in the third set.
Indiana swept the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Sarah McLean and Natalie Whalen defeated Li and senior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas), 6-2, while Appel and Wolf downed Levy and sophomore Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.), 6-3.
Rutgers continues its homestand on Friday, March 25, when the Scarlet Knights host No. 62 Illinois. Depending on the weather, the match will either be contested at the RU Tennis Complex or the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
