Softball Completes Comeback Win on Walkoff Single from Slowinski
Mar 22 | Softball
Rutgers improved to a record of 15-16 overall, while Hofstra fell to a mark 13-11 overall.
Senior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) entered the contest with a 4-1 RU deficit in the top of the third and registered two scoreless frames to set up the Scarlet Knights for their comeback. Hofstra's Courtney Scarpato suffered the loss.
Leading the RU lineup was senior Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) with career-highs in hits (3) and RBIs (4), including her second home run of the season. Classmates Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) and Slowinski followed with two hits each in the win.
Three different Pride added a home run in the loss, including Michaela Transue, Nikki Michalowsi and Megan Patierno. Transue led the team with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with two RBIs and two runs.
Hofstra moved to a 2-0 lead in the game with a single run in each of the first two innings, including a homer from Michalowski in the second.
Adams countered with a home run of her own in the bottom of the second to cut into the score, 2-1.
In the top of the third, Hofstra continued to expand its lead with a two-run home run from Transue to increase the Pride lead to 4-1. Maddox then entered the circle for RU, posting a strikeout to end the frame and prevent any further damage.
After Hofstra added another run in the top of the fourth, Huang registered an RBI single to send in a run and bring the margin to 5-2.
Although another Pride home run pushed their lead to 6-2, the Scarlet Knights ignited its comeback with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. After a walk for sophomore Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) and a bunt single for Slowinski, Adams registered an RBI single to send both runners in and cut into the deficit 6-4.
Maddox held up work in the circle, striking out the fifth batter she faced in the frame to strand a runner on and keep it a two-run game in the sixth.
In the bottom of the inning, Adams capitalized on a loaded bases situation posting her third hit of the game to send in her fourth RBI. Junior Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) followed with a walk to force in the tying run, setting the score at 6-6.
Maddox registered her second consecutive scoreless frame to keep the score knotted, 6-6.
With two-outs in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Nicolette Anico (Liberty County, Fla.) registered a single to keep RU alive. After Hall followed with a walk, Slowinski blasted a single through the left side to send Anico home for the winning run.
