March 5, 2016 Box Score
NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) allowed just two earned runs over seven innings, but Rutgers baseball suffered a 4-2 loss to Old Dominion in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader at the Bud Metheny Complex. The Scarlet Knights and Monarchs have now met in each of the last 20 seasons.
In what developed into a pitcher's duel, Brey (1-2) suffered a hard-luck defeat with four hits surrendered in his longest outing so far this year. The left-hander struck out four in the 97-pitch outing.
Offensively, fifth-year senior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) and junior Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) both registered two hits. However, the Scarlet Knights (3-5) were held to five hits in the game and stranded six runners on base.
For Old Dominion (8-1), starter Sam Sinnen worked six scoreless frames with no walks and two hits permitted. Morgan Maguire (1-0) earned the win by pitching one innings, while Nick Hartman collected his second save after recording the last six outs.
After each side went down scoreless in the first three innings, the Monarchs broke through with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The score was a benefactor of an error, which went across unearned.
It would stay a 1-0 game until RU tied it in the seventh. Fifth-year senior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) started by being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a one-out balk. Next up, Rosa connected for an RBI double to right-center.
Quickly responding, Old Dominion added a pair of runs in its half of the seventh to regain the lead. Rutgers chipped back with one in the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.), who drove in senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.), but the hosts would secure the final outs to seal the victory.
Game two of the doubleheader followed.
