COLUMBUS, Ohio - In a low-scoring rubber game, Rutgers baseball fell on the short side in a 2-1 loss to Ohio State Sunday at Bill Davis Stadium. The game featured just nine combined hits and was played in two hours, nine minutes.
Sophomore Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) homered to right field to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead in the third inning. However, that was the only run RU pushed across, being held to four hits and stranding four runners on base.
On the mound, sophomore John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) (0-3) turned in quality start with two runs permitted over six innings. The right-hander scattered four hits and struck out three. Redshirt junior Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) followed out of the bullpen with two scoreless frames.
Ohio State (23-12-1, 4-5) tied up the game with a run on a groundout in the fourth, but O'Reilly limited the damage with double play to keep it 1-1. In the sixth, Troy Montgomery hit a leadoff triple and came in on a single by Jacob Bosiokovic. That would prove to be enough to give the win to Adam Niemeyer (3-1), who struck out seven with three hits and one run allowed in a six-inning start.
Rutgers (16-19, 3-6) threatened in the eighth when Freeman singled for his second hit and stole second, but was left on. Then in the ninth, fifth-year senior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) walked with one out. Following a strikeout, Yianni Pavlopoulos entered from the bullpen and recorded the final out for his eighth save of the year to clinch the series for the hosts.
The Scarlet Knights will next head home to prepare for a Tuesday home game against Delaware State. First pitch at Bainton Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
