Tennis Closes Season with Loss to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Rutgers tennis closed out its spring season with a close 4-3 loss to Minnesota on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The Scarlet Knights secured the doubles point for the second time this weekend, while seniors Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) finished their collegiate careers with singles wins.

RU saw wins in both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions to take an early 1-0 lead. Zein and classmate Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) defeated Paula Rincon-Otero and Julia Courter, 7-5, while Kayati and junior Ksenija Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) triumphed over Caroline Ryba and Annemarie Emme, 6-4. Rutgers also captured the doubles point Friday against Wisconsin.

In singles action, Kayati won in straight sets over Emme, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 5 position. Zein's bought in the No. 4 position against Jessika Mozia went to the third decisive set. After closing out the first set with a close 7-6 (7-2) win, Mozia battled back with a convincing 6-1 win. But Zein would respond, downing Mozia, 6-2, for the win.

Li's match against Ryba in the No. 1 position was the last of the afternoon and also came down to the third deciding stanza. Li jumped ahead with a tough 7-5 advantage before Ryba closed out the match with 6-2 and 6-1 wins.
