PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Patrick Hobbs today announced that Hilary Ritchie will serve as head coach of the tennis team. Ritchie has been an assistant with the Scarlet Knights for the past six seasons.
"We are very excited to elevate Hilary to head coach," said Hobbs. "She competed in the Big Ten and Mountain West conferences and understands the commitment necessary to excel. She has been integral to the team's improvement on the court and its achievement in the classroom. We look forward to the program's continued progress under her leadership."
"I'm very excited to take over the program and to get things underway with the team," said Ritchie. "I'm looking forward to working with this great group of student-athletes as we continue to improve as members of the Big Ten Conference."
A valuable part of the program since she arrived in 2010, Ritchie was named the 2015 Assistant Coach of the Year in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). During her tenure at Rutgers, she has assisted the program through three conference changes and guided RU through the Big Ten in 2016, one of the most competitive leagues in the country.
Before her time with the Scarlet Knights, Ritchie served for two years as a graduate assistant at Division III St. Lawrence in Canton, New York. With the Saints, she helped with various aspects of the program, including coaching, recruiting and fundraising.
Ritchie competed collegiately at Iowa, where she compiled a 37-25 record in doubles, before finishing her career at Colorado State. During her senior campaign with the Rams, Ritchie posted a team best 18-11 record in the No. 1 singles position and contributed to 22 victories in the No. 1 doubles position. The 22 wins marked the most doubles wins in CSU history at the time.
Ritchie was a two-time All-Mountain West honoree at Colorado State and earned ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades in 2004, 2007 and 2008.
Ritchie resides in Chester, New Jersey, with her husband, Bob, and her son, Tyler.
