Tennis Concludes at Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rutgers tennis finished play at the Brown Invitational Sunday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island. In their collegiate debuts, freshmen Katherine Muzik and Jacqueline Cochrane finished with two singles victories each to lead the Scarlet Knights in their fall season opener.
"The girls played very well in their first competition at Brown," head coach Hilary Ritchie said. "The teams were good and the level of competition was high, so I was pleased with our results. It was a great opportunity to see where our strengths are and where we need to improve."
After falling behind in her first set on Sunday, Muzik collected RU's lone singles win of the day with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over Brown's Maddie Stearns. Muzik also paired with senior Ksenija Tihomirova for a victory in doubles play, as the duo downed Stearns and Devon Jack, 8-6.
On Saturday, Rutgers produced three singles wins against UMass, as junior Mingxiu Du, junior Chloe Lee and Cochrane all added singles triumphs. In her second Division I match, Du fell behind to UMass's Ana Yrazusta, 2-6, before rallying back with 7-5 and 6-2 wins in her final two sets. Lee also won in three sets over Ruth Crawford, while Cochrane added her second singles victory of the fall with a 7-5, 7-5 win against Laura Moreno. In doubles play, Cochrane and junior Lee Levy had an 8-7 (4) victory over Moreno and Martina Bocchi.
The Scarlet Knights return to action Oct. 7-9 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland.
