Scarlet Knights send most players to ITA's since 2012
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 17, 2017) – Rutgers tennis will be well represented at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at UPenn with five Scarlet Knights set to compete in the singles and doubles draws from Oct. 18-23 in Philadelphia. The Northeast region is comprised of 44 NCAA Division I programs.
Senior Mingxiu Du, sophomore Kat Muzik and freshman Maya Jacobs have qualified for the main singles draw, while senior Chloe Lee and sophomore Jaci Cochrane will start play in the qualifier on Wednesday. If all five end up playing in the main singles draw, it will be the most in program history at the ITA Regional Championships. Rutgers' five competitors at ITA's is the most since sending seven in 2012.
In the main draw of the doubles championship, Du will team with Cochrane, and Muzik will partner up with Jacobs.
"We will be looking to play more active, aggressive doubles," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "It is great to have so many players qualifying for singles. I am hoping we can play well and go deep into the draw. These individual events are great for us to focus in on each competitor to help them succeed."
Lee and Cochrane will kick off the action on Wednesday in the qualifier, needing two victories in the single-elimination format to join the main draw. Lee is 2-4 this season in singles play and brings a team-high 23 career victories into the ITA Regional Championships. Cochrane is 4-3 this fall with 17 career wins early in her sophomore campaign.
Du books a return to the ITA Regional Championships main draw for the second straight year. As a junior in 2016, Du collected two wins in the qualifier to move on to the main draw, where she picked up one more win before bowing out in the second round. This season, she has posted a 2-3 singles record for the Scarlet Knights.
Muzik and Jacobs make their ITA debuts in the main draw this weekend. Both are tied for the team-lead in singles wins this season at 5-2. This is the second straight year a freshman will be in the main draw, following Cochrane's performance last season. Muzik, as a sophomore, ranks second on the current roster in career singles wins with an 18-15 record.
Du and Cochrane are 2-2 as a doubles pair this season, while Muzik and Jacobs have gone 3-2 while sharing a court.
