Cochrane’s Thrilling Qualifier Wins Give Tennis Four in Main ITA Draw

Sophomore wins back-to-back three-setters to advance
PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 18, 2017) – Rutgers tennis will have four players in the main singles draw at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at UPenn, as sophomore Jaci Cochrane won a pair of three-set matches to advance out of the qualifier bracket on Wednesday.
Cochrane defeated Malin Leysen of LIU Brooklyn in the opening round by winning the do-or-die third set by a score of 6-4. Cochrane and Leysen split the first two sets 6-2 and 6-3, respectively. In a test of early season endurance, Cochrane outlasted URI's Rachel Smilansky 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to book her spot in the main draw beginning Thursday.
Cochrane joins senior Mingxiu Du, sophomore Kat Muzik and freshman Maya Jacobs in the main draw, tying the program record for number of Scarlet Knights in the primary singles bracket at an ITA regional championship.
Senior Chloe Lee was also in action in the qualifier on Wednesday, dropping an opening round match to Ghita Benhadi in straight sets.
Cochrane advances to face Tiffany Chen of Princeton in Round 1. Muzik has a first-round bye, Du will meet Melanie Allen of Army and Jacobs takes on Anna Grigoryan of LIU Brooklyn. When doubles play starts, Du and Cochrane team up, as do Muzik and Jacobs.
