PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 5, 2017) – Rutgers tennis is one of 11 teams mixing it up at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational on Friday-Sunday, Oct. 6-8 in Annapolis, Md.
Starting at 9 a.m. each day, a total of 18 courts at the indoor Tose Family Tennis Center, the outdoor Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium and the outdoor 8th Wing Courts will host this year's action. At the 2016 Blue & Gold Invitational, Jaci Cochrane and Class of 2017 alum Farris Cunningham captured the "B" flight championship, while current senior Lee Levy and sophomore Kyra Yap claimed the "C" flight title.
THE FIELD
The U.S. Naval Academy will host six singles flights and three doubles flights throughout the weekend. Competing teams are Navy, Binghamton, UConn, George Mason, George Washington, Howard, Maryland, Morgan State, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Towson.
THE EXPECTATIONS
Head coach Hilary Ritchie: "This is the second year we are competing in this event. Some of the teams are new, which will be good for us. I'm hoping we have a lot of players representing on the last day. We have worked hard on doubles, so I'm looking forward to see how we can implement those strategies."
KNIGHT NOTES
• Cochrane was the runner-up in last year's "C" flight singles bracket, falling to Buffalo's Anna Savchenko, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2).
• In the team's first competition of the year, freshman Maya Jacobs led the Scarlet Knights at the Brown Invitational with a 3-0 singles record and a 2-1 doubles mark. The Rutgers rookie did not drop a set in singles action against competition from Brown, UMass and Stony Brook.
• Sophomore Kat Muzik finished the Brown Invitational 2-1 in both singles and doubles play. Muzik teamed with Jacobs in doubles competition, a preview of Rutgers' possible "A" flight pairing at Navy.
• Levy was a versatile doubles partner at Brown, finding success with two different partners. She scored a 6-1 victory over Stony Brook playing with Cochrane, and a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3) win with senior Chloe Lee against the host Bears.
• Seniors Mingxiu Du and Lee each picked up singles wins at Brown, while freshmen Isabelle Da Silva and Kat Rosenberger joined Jacobs in celebrating their first collegiate singles victories last weekend.
Up Next: Select Scarlet Knights will enter the ITA Northeast Regional Championships from Oct. 18-23 in Philadelphia, hosted by UPenn.
