Two doubles squads bow out in quarterfinal matches on opening day
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Oct. 6, 2017) – Rutgers tennis combined for five wins throughout singles and doubles flights during Day 1 at Navy's Blue & Gold Invitational on Friday. Day 2 will feature four quarterfinal singles matches for the Scarlet Knights.
In the Singles A Flight, senior Mingxiu Du advanced to the quarters with her opening round win over Towson's Lucy Williams in comeback fashion. After dropping the first set in an overtime tiebreaker, 9-7, Du bounced back with a 6-0 win in Set 2 and advanced on a thrilling 11-9 victory in the superbreaker.
The A Flight also saw freshman Maya Jacobs suffer the first singles defeat of her collegiate career in a Big Ten preview match against Maryland's Zoe Kulkami, who triumphed 6-4, 7-5.
The Singles C Flight will have two Rutgers teammates fighting on in the quarterfinals with sophomore Jaci Cochrane and freshman Isabelle Da Silva both winning in straight sets in Friday's openers. If the two would meet in the flight, it would not be until Sunday's final.
Sophomore Kat Muzik will be Rutgers' fourth representative in Saturday's quarterfinal round following her first round bye.
Rutgers scored two doubles wins in the A Flight as Du and Cochrane went over a duo from Towson by a score of 6-4, while Muzik and Jacobs teamed up for a 6-4 victory over a pair from Morgan State. Both sets of RU's doubles squads exited the draw in the quarterfinal round later in the day with Du/Cochrane falling 6-4 to Navy and Muzik/Jacobs dropping a barnburner to Navy, 7-6 (11-9).
Day 2 begins at 9 a.m. at the U.S. Naval Academy.
