ABOUT SETON HALL
After a 12-19 season a year ago, the Pirates are off to a hot start in 2017-18 with a 6-1 record.
Seton Hall's lone loss on the season has come at the hands of fellow Jersey school, Princeton, back on Nov. 16 in a tight 85-83 setback. The Pirates came back from a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to pull within a possession, 83-80, in the closing moments. However, the Tigers were able to keep control with a trip to the free throw line.
Since the loss to the Tigers, Seton Hall has won four-straight including Saturday's 84-50 victory over St. Francis (NY).
The Pirates are led by redshirt sophomore forward Taylor Brown at 14.4 points and team-leading 6.3 rebounds per contest. Brown currently leads the Big East in field goal percentage shooting at a .544 clip.
Graduate student forward/guard Donnaizh Fountain follows on the stat sheet with 13. 6 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest and is followed by redshirt senior guard JaQuan Jackson with 13.4 points per game. Jackson still remains perfect at the free throw line this season having knocked down all 19 of her attempts from the stripe thus far.
LAST TIME VS. SETON HALL
Behind a near triple-double by Khadaizha Sanders, the Rutgers women's basketball team captured a 53-45 win and the program's 900th victory against in-state rival Seton Hall at the RAC on Dec. 13, 2016.
Sanders posted career-highs with 17 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds.
Seton Hall was led by JaQuan Jackson with a game-best 21 points.
Rutgers raced to a 10-2 lead to open the contest before Seton Hall tied up the frame 10-10 with 1:40 to go in the first quarter. The Scarlet Knights quickly regained control of the lead and Jazlynd Rollins hauled in a rebound and beat the buzzer to set the Rutgers lead at 14-10 going into the second quarter.
A 3-pointer for Jackson to open the second quarter followed by successful trips to the free throw line for the Pirates helped send SHU on a 19-4 run with Seton Hall carrying a 29-18 lead into the locker room.
Returning from the break, Rutgers ignited a 15-3 run to reclaim the lead at 33-32 with 3:00 to go in the third stanza.
The Pirates managed to pull within one but RU held a 38-37 edge at the end of three.
The teams entered a stalemate at the start of the fourth before the Pirates added the first four points to sneak back into the lead at 41-38 with 7:19 remaining in the game.
A 3-pointer for Sanders would tie up the score, 41-41, as the teams entered a point-for-point battle and traded the lead on two occasions.
Sanders closed out the game with seven points at the free throw line to secure the win for RU.
CAREY ME ON THE BOARDS
Rutgers managed to out haul James Madison in the season opener, 48-34, but in the next eight games, the Scarlet Knights were either outrebounded or held no more than a two board advantage.
That changed on Monday night against Virginia as RU won the battle of the boards, 38-29, the largest rebounding margin for Rutgers since the season opener.
Redshirt junior Stasha Carey has been a force to be reckon with on the glass grabbing a team-high nine in rebounds in each of the last three games. In that three game span, she is averaging 7.0 boards on the defensive end.
HELPING HANDS
After committing 25 turnovers against James Madison in the season opener on Nov. 10, the Scarlet Knights have significantly cut down the number of miscues. Since then, RU has averaged only 13.7 turnovers per contest.
In the following games, Rutgers committed only 12 turnovers at Temple on Nov. 13 and 13 turnovers on Nov. 16 at Charlotte.
More recently, the Scarlet Knights had a season-low eight turnovers against Virginia on Dec. 4.
Conversely, Rutgers opponents have committed 20 or miscues in eight of 10 games. Only defending national champion South Carolina and Virginia have turned the ball over less than 20 times. The No. 3/2 Gamecocks committed 18 turnovers, while the Cavalier committed just 12.
STRINGER MILESTONE NUMBERS TO REMEMBER
Rutgers head coach Stringer has compiled a 985-392 career record in 47 seasons and is 15 wins away from joining Stanford's Tara VanDerveer and former Tennessee head coach Pat Summit with 1,000 career victories in women's basketball.
In 2013, Stringer became just the seventh coach - men's or women's - to reach the 900-win mark.
Stringer's 34 20-win seasons are second-best in women's basketball history. Former Tennessee head coach Pat Summit leads all coaches with 36 20-win seasons.
Stringer is the fourth active winningest Division I coach and sixth all-time in career wins in NCAA women's basketball history.
In the Dec. 3 win over Bucknell last season, the Rutgers women's basketball team played its 1300th game in history since beginning the program in 1974.
SCAIFE MILESTONE NUMBERS TO REMEMBER
Redshirt senior guard Tyler Scaife has climbed four positions on the Rutgers all-time scoring leaders list in the last three games.
In the Big Ten/ACC Challenge against NC State on Nov. 30, Scaife's 27 points moved her into seventh all-time in scoring past Caroline DeRoose (1990-94).
Then with 18 points in last Saturday's win over Siena, she moved into sixth place all-time surpassing Telicher Austin (1985-89).
In the following game, Scaife's 22 points in RU's win over Virginia pushed her name up two more slots passing Vicky Pickott (1987-91) and Regina Howard (1983-87) into fourth all-time in Scarlet Knight scoring.
With 1,812 career points, the Little Rock, Arkansas native needs 61 more points to surpass former teammate Kahleah Copper (2012-16) for the third position on the scoring list.
