SCOUTING RUTGERS
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 17-6 win over then-No. 17 Miami to take the finale of the three-game series. It was the most runs scored and the largest RU margin of victory against the Hurricanes in the 65th all-time meeting. Rutgers had more runs (21-17), hits (28-20), home runs (3-1) and a higher on-base percentage (.362-.342) on the weekend than Miami.
In the win, the bats exploded to score in six different innings with five multiple-run rallies. Senior Mike Carter went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and classmate Gaby Rosa also had three hits with three knocked in of his own. Freshman Eric Reardon picked up the win on the mound by stranding two inherited runners, as four relievers would follow to shutout UM for the last 4.1 innings.
Sophomore Jawuan Harris led the team offensively for the weekend with a 1.943 OPS (1.300 slugging, .643 on-base) and six runs scored. The outfielder, who ranked fifth in the nation with 37 stolen bases a year ago, reached base 9-of-14 times to go with a sacrifice bunt and also blasted two home runs. Reaching via two doubles and three walks to score four times in the Sunday win, he has a 23-game on-base streak dating back to 2016.
Carter's four RBIs paced the lineup for the series, while senior Christian Campbell, Harris and Rosa all had three. In addition, junior Chris Folinusz popped his second career home run the other way.
On the mound, Rutgers will stay with the same weekend rotation as last week -- junior John O'Reilly, sophomore Serafino Brito and sophomore James Torres. O'Reilly had a career-high seven strikeouts on Opening Day in seven complete innings to match his longest career start. The right-hander scattered three hits and permitted two runs. Following up, Brito went six innings in his first start of the year with four strikeouts and no walks. He had four perfect frames in the outing. Torres made his first career start in the finale and worked three scoreless innings with four strikeouts to start the day, lasting 3.2 innings overall.
RU used nine different relievers out of the bullpen. Campbell worked the longest with two scoreless innings on Sunday. Freshmen Joe Neglia, Kyle Gerace and Reardon all made their collegiate debuts. Both freshman Kevin Welsh, who started all three games at second base, and redshirt freshman Tommy Genuario made their initial appearances as position players.
NOTABLE
The last time RU opened the season with six games against ranked opponents was 2009 (four at No. 12 Miami, two at No. 8 Georgia Tech) ... both Carter and Campbell hit 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position at Miami ... Rutgers is 30-8 in games scoring at least six runs since 2015 ... this series marks the second of six weekends away to start the campaign.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA
The Cavaliers, who have made the NCAA Tournament in each of the previous 13 seasons and won the 2015 National Championship, are ranked No. 13 in the NCBWA poll this week. UVA rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the seventh inning to win its home opener, 9-7, over VMI Tuesday. That followed a 3-0 weekend to start the year with victories over Liberty, The Citadel and Kansas in Charleston, South Carolina
Nate Eikhoff leads the team with a .571 on-base percentage so far, while Pavin Smith has clubbed a pair of home runs and owns eight RBIs. Left-hander Daniel Lynch will take the ball on Friday after pitching 6.1 innings with six strikeouts and one earned run allowed in a win in his season debut. Overall, Virginia holds a .348 team batting average and a 4.25 staff ERA.
This weekend's series will be contested at Davenport Field in Charlottesville. The stadium has a capacity of 5,025 and dimensions of 332-370-404-372-332 from left to right.
Head coach Brian O'Connor is in his 14th season at the helm of the program. Click here for more on Virginia.
THE SERIES
Rutgers has won 5-of-6 all-time meetings against Virginia in records since 1949, but the two teams have not met since RU's season opener in 1962, a 10-2 road victory. The Scarlet Knights also secured two victories on the way to a berth in the College World Series in 1950 and won 2-of-3 in 1949.
However, Rutgers did travel to Virginia to compete in a 2007 NCAA Regional. After winning the Big East title, RU took on Oregon State and Lafayette, but did not face the host Cavaliers. RU and UVA also had a 2014 midweek game called off due to inclement weather.
UP NEXT
Rutgers is scheduled for its home opener Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Wagner at Bainton Field. It would be the earliest home game on the calendar in program history. After that, the Scarlet Knights will return to the state of Virginia to take on Old Dominion for the 21st consecutive season.
