Tennis Drops Weekend Matches

EVANSTON, Ill. - Rutgers tennis dropped its pair of road Big Ten Matches this weekend, as it fell at Illinois, 6-1, on Saturday and at No. 47 Northwestern, 5-2, on Sunday.
"Although we lost, we had some very close matches," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "We played very smart in our doubles to win the point against Northwestern against some terrific teams."
The Scarlet Knights claimed the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Junior Mingxiu Du and freshman Katherine Muzik defeated Nina Van Oost and Brooke Rischbieth, 7-5. Senior Farris Cunningham and freshman Jacqueline Cochrane collected their team-leading eighth doubles victory with a 6-3 decision over Jillian Rooney and Lee Or.
In singles play, Cunningham added her first-career Big Ten victory in the No. 6 position. The Houston native won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to down Rischbieth.
Two other singles matches went to the third decisive set, as Muzik lost to Alex Chatt, 6-2, 7-6, (7-2). Cochrane fell to Rooney, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
Cochrane was the lone winner in singles play Saturday afternoon against Illinois. The Fort Dodge, Iowa, native captured the first set, 6-4, and was losing in her second set before the match was retired, giving Cochrane the win.
