MINNEAPOLIS - In the opener of a midweek Big Ten doubleheader, Rutgers baseball suffered a 6-2 loss to Minnesota Tuesday at Siebert Field. It was start of playing five road conference games in five days.
Sophomore Serafino Brito (3-9) worked on three-days rest and provided five innings on the mound. The right-hander struck out three and walked none, surrendering four runs. Freshman Eric Reardon followed with three innings of relief.
At the plate, senior Christian Campbell extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double and a single. He is hitting .370/.383/.522 over the span.
The Scarlet Knights (19-30, 7-12) scored first with a run in the top of the first. Campbell stroked a one-out double down the left-field line, advancing on a wild pitch. Sophomore Mike Martinez then grounded a ball to second base for an RBI. However, Minnesota (31-17, 13-6) hit solo homers in the first and second innings, adding two more runs on three hits in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Rutgers scored one in the fourth to make it a two-run game. Junior Milo Freeman led off with a single through the right side, moved up on a groundout and scored when senior Mike Carter came through with a two-out double.
The Golden Gophers added their third homer of the game in the seventh to take a 6-2 advantage. That would prove to be the final score, as RU was held to six hits.
Tyler Hanson (4-4) earned the win for the home team with two runs permitted in 5.1 innings, while Reggie Meyer tossed the last 3.2 frames for his second save of the season. Minnesota totaled 11 hits.
