Rutgers rookie goes 3-0 without dropping a set

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 24, 2017) – Rutgers tennis wrapped up competition at the season opening Brown Invitational on Sunday afternoon, highlighted by freshman Maya Jacobs finishing singles play at 3-0 without dropping a single set to foes from Brown, Stony Brook and UMass.

Playing in a dual match mirror style tournament, the Scarlet Knights faced off in tournament matches against Brown, UMass and Stony Brook throughout the weekend. Rutgers was 1-7 in singles action and 1-3 in the doubles pairings against UMass competition on Sunday.

Jacobs had her hand in both Scarlet Knight victories on Sunday as she combined with sophomore Kat Muzik for a 6-4 triumph over UMass' top doubles team, setting the duo's early season record at 2-1. In singles play, Jacobs topped the Minutemen's Laura Moreno at the No. 4 spot by a score of 7-5, 6-0. Jacobs had a 37-13 advantage in set scores throughout singles play during the invitational at Brown.

Muzik dropped an opening set tiebreak 7-4 at No. 3 singles before falling in straight sets, and senior Lee Levy lost a heartbreaker at No. 7 by dropping an 11-9 superbreaker after each player won a set. Freshman Kat Rosenberger also took her UMass foe to a superbreaker, falling 10-4.

The Scarlet Knights continue the fall tournament portion of their 2017-18 schedule on Friday-Sunday, Oct. 6-8 at the Navy Invitational.
