PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's soccer is ranked No. 25 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, released Tuesday.
The Scarlet Knights concluded the regular season with a record of 11-2-5 and 7-1-3 in Big Ten play. RU finished as the runner-ups for the conference regular season title, as the second-place result marks the highest for the program since joining the league in 2014.
Qualifying for its fifth straight Big Ten Tournament, RU earned the No. 2 seed, its highest seed to date. The Scarlet Knights hosted Minnesota for a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, being edged by a late Golden Gopher goal.
At the conclusion of the regular season, a program-record seven Scarlet Knights received All-Big Ten laurels. Sophomore forward Amirah Ali (First Team), senior back Kenie Wright (Second Team), junior midfielder Nicole Whitley (Third Team), senior back Madison Pogarch (Third Team), junior defender Chantelle Swaby (Third Team), and freshman Meagan McClelland (Third Team) were named All-Big Ten. McClelland and classmate Shea Holland were selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team as well.
McClelland, who led the league in goals-against average and shutouts, was bestowed the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award. It is the third straight year an RU rookie has claimed the honor and the fourth consecutive year RU has earned at least one of the Big Ten's major awards. It is also just the second time in Big Ten women's soccer history that a school received the rookie honor in three consecutive seasons.
Additionally, Rutgers sits at 30th in the NCAA RPI rankings.
The Scarlet Knights await selection for the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. The selection show is set to air on Monday, Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
