Howard Gets Past Men's Soccer in Double Overtime
Oct 09 | Men's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – It was the Howard Bison who came away with the golden goal in the 107th minute to defeat the Rutgers men's soccer team, 1-0, in double overtime on Tuesday night at Yurcak Field.
The Bison's Ronald Little sent the ball into the box from the far side with the serve taking a bounce and ricocheting off keeper Rafael Pereira, as he tried to make the stop. Howard's Matteo Turner was able to collect the rebound from six yards out and send the ball into the back of the Scarlet Knight net for the win.
The Scarlet Knights (2-9-1) outshot the Bison, 16-11, with leading scorer Jordan Hall accounting for five attempts on the night.
Hall had a free kick from 25 yards out hit the top part of the crossbar to send his shot over the Howard net in the 41st minute and was later called offside on what had looked to be a Scarlet Knight score in the 54th minute. Redshirt senior Kyle Goodwin fired from outside the 18 and his shot was punched back in play by Bison keeper Carlos Caro for Hall to pick up the loose ball, but the junior forward was called offsides as he had an open look at goal.
Rutgers had another big opportunity in the 74th minute. The Bison turned away a Scarlet Knight corner kick, but freshman Thomas DeVizio picked up the clear and found sophomore Bryce Washington at the far post. Washington's header bounced in front of the Howard goal line and over the net.
The Scarlet Knights' best chance in overtime came from freshman Andrew Murray in the 105th minute. As the Bison looked to clear the ball out of the 18, a header by freshman Seth Tuner at the top of the box gave Murray a chance at the left post from six yards out, but was thwarted by a sliding Caro.
RU's Pereira finished the night with four saves, while Howard's Caro turned away eight Scarlet Knight shots.
"It was clear we didn't finish our chances," said head coach Dan Donigan. "We certainly had enough opportunities, but at the end of the day you still have to put the ball in the back of the net and we weren't able to do
that. It was very unfortunate, a bad hop to give that game away.
"We've got to focus our attention to where that needs to be and that's conference play and Friday night. We can't focus on these negatives. We put ourselves in this position and we have to move on. We can really do a lot for ourselves Friday if we can bounce back from this loss."
The Rutgers men's soccer team returns to action on Friday night against Northwestern. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
