UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Women's golf placed fourth with an 896 (298-300-298) at the 12-team Nittany Lion Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday on the Penn State Blue Course. Three Scarlet Knights finished among the top 25 in the 72-player field.
"This wasn't the finish we were looking for when we started the weekend, but I did see some better stretches of golf today," said head coach Kari Williams. "Ana (Cortes) bounced back and played her final eight holes one under par. Eun Won (Park) found more consistency in her game today and was able to hole a few more putts. And overall, Carrie-Ann (Lee) put together another strong event to lead the team."
Junior Eun Won Park carded a 71 on the par 72, 6,322-yard course on Sunday to register RU's top round of the event. Playing in fifth position, she placed 16th with a 223 (76-76-71) courtesy of a team-best nine birdies.
"I felt good this morning after my warm-up on the green and got a few putts to roll in early in the round," said Park. "All around, my game was steadier than it's been and was happy with how I played today."
Senior Carrie-Ann Lee was RU's top overall performer, tying for 11th with a 220 (73-72-75). Minus two on par five holes with 37 pars, she was joined at the top of the RU scorecard by Park and Anna-Maria Diederichs. The freshman, who was also minus two on par fives, tied for 24th with a 227 (72-77-78)
Senior Ana Cortes and sophomore Maeve Rossi completed the team scorecard. Cortes turned in her best round of the fall thus far on Sunday to finish tied for 37th with a 232 (77-81-74), while Rossi tied for 46th with a 234 (78-75-81).
Competing individually, junior Lori Char is tied for 32nd with a 231 (77-78-76).
In their second of five fall tournaments, the Scarlet Knights placed ahead of High Point, Navy, Towson, Akron, Bucknell, Georgetown, Youngstown State and Ohio.
Penn led the Invitational from start to finish to earn the title with an 868, eight strokes ahead of the host Nittany Lions. Three competitors shared the top individual performance with two-under 214 efforts.
Rutgers returns to the links at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, Sept. 27-29 in Lexington, Ky.
"We will have a few days of practice to regroup and work on our games before we head to Kentucky," added Williams.
