Baseball Completes Sweep at No. 19 Nebraska

Teller deals seven scoreless innings

LINCOLN, Neb. – Using seven scoreless innings from Brent Teller and a balanced offensive attack, Rutgers baseball (17-13) blanked No. 19 Nebraska (20-10), 6-0, Sunday at Hawks Field to complete a three-game weekend sweep. It marked the first Big Ten road sweep for the program since joining the conference and extended the winning streak to five, all on the road at a ranked opponent.

"We were happy to get off to a good start with Richie's double in the first, we hadn't played ahead yet this weekend," head coach Steve Owens said. "Brent has been awesome in his last two starts. He's a pro pitcher, someone should draft him. He's a dude. He's been outstanding, controlled the count with electric stuff. All weekend long we were able to get runners in without hits, with two-strike hits and with two outs. Nebraska is a very good team, first place in the Big Ten. I'm happy that our guys stepped up to the challenge."

The Scarlet Knights scored a run two batters into the game on an RBI double by Richie Schiekofer, who added a two-run double in the fourth and finished 3-for-4 on the day. Mike Nyisztor reached base four times with two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch to score three runs. Evan Sleight contributed two hits with a run driven in, while Chris Brito doubled and singled. All nine in the lineup had at least one hit, one RBI or one run overall.

On the mound, Teller struck out the side in the first inning and worked seven scoreless frames to earn the win. The right-hander permitted just two hits and walked three, striking out eight to match his season high also reached last week. He has dealt 14.1 innings with only four hits and two runs surrendered the last two times out.

Kyle Muller stranded an inherited runner on in the eighth in retiring all three batters he faced. In the ninth, Dale Stanavich left two on base to secure Rutgers' second shutout of the year.

Shay Schanaman took the loss for the Huskers with four runs allowed in six innings. Nebraska entered the weekend ranked No. 19 in the latest Perfect Game poll.

  • Rutgers pitched its first road shutout in a Big Ten game.
  • Rutgers is now 12-6 on the road this year, having won seven of the last eight. The team entered the season 11-47 in Big Ten road games the previous five seasons combined.

  • Rutgers improved to a season-best four games over .500.
