Rutgers enters the game at 3-1 overall following a 71-60 win over Georgetown in the Gavitt Games on Wednesday night. The Scarlet Knights never trailed in the game and led by as much as 18 points in the second half. RU had a complete and balanced team performance, with six players scoring between eight and 15 points, led by 15 points from Derek Simpson. The sophomore guard paced the squad in scoring behind a 6-of-6 performance from the free throw line and remains perfect at the charity stripe thus far at 14-of-14.
The Scarlet Knights got huge energy off the bench, with two young freshmen stepping up in key moments. Jamichael Davis has come onto the scene for Rutgers, finishing his amazing performance against Georgetown with 9 points. He went 4-of-7 shooting, including one momentum building three-pointer. Gavin Griffiths recorded 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and scored ten of his points in the second half.
Rutgers forced Georgetown to turn the ball over 21 times. Off these turnovers, the Scarlet Knights scored 25 points. Their gritty style of play persisted throughout the entire game, as 14 points off turnovers came in the first half and 11 points off turnovers were scored in the second half.
Noah Fernandes and Aundre Hyatt led the team in minutes, with 33 and 32 minutes played respectively. The upperclassmen both hit two three-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half to bring the Scarlet Knights up 18 points. Their veteran leadership as starters helped the team secure the win.
Rutgers is 3-0 at home this season, 17-6 at home over the past two seasons, 27-10 at home over the past three seasons and 45-11 at home over the past four seasons.
The Scarlet Knights have averaged 18.75 fast break points per game this season. That is 35th nationally and 3rd among Big Ten teams. Last season, RU averaged 11.32 fast break points per game.
Cliff Omoruyi has 136 career blocks. He is two shy of tying Myles Johnson for eighth all-time at RU in blocks. He also had 699 rebounds, four shy of tying for 11th place at RU (Kelvin Troy) and six shy of tying Anthony Duckett for 10th.
Under head coach Kenney Blackeney, who is 44-65 in five seasons at HU, his lone head coaching stop, Howard enters the matchup with a 2-2 record. The Bison downed common foe Boston University on Tuesday, as well defeating Hampton. Howard also played ACC foe Georgia Tech tight, ultimately falling by just three points, and also lost at No. 24 James Madison.
Through four games, Bryce Harris leads the team at 18.5 points per game and 6.3 rebounds. He is one of four Bison averaging in double-figures. Seth Towns, the 2018 Ivy League Player of the Year at Harvard who also played at Ohio State, made his debut this week with 13 points against BU. The Bison overall are averaging 81.8 points per game, shooting 47.1 percent from the field.
The Bison went 22-13 overall last season, with an 11-3 record in the MEAC, and they also claimed the conference tournament title. The Bison were a No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 1 seed Kansas in the Opening Round. The team was led by ECAC Coach of the Year Kenneth Blakeney and MEAC Rookie of the Year Shy Odom, who is averaging 11.8 points per game this year through four contests.
Rutgers and Howard have faced off twice, with the Scarlet Knights winning both games, which both came at home. In 2015, Rutgers earned an 82-70 win behind 17 points from Deshawn Freeman and 15 from Corey Sanders in the freshman's first collegiate game. In 2012, Rutgers claimed a 79-55 victory with Eli Carter posting a game-high 20 points in 29 minutes as RU shot 60 percent from the field. This will be the first time that Rutgers faces Howard under head coach Steve Pikiell
Rutgers next has a nine-game break around Thanksgiving Week. The team returns to action on Monday, Nov. 27 when they host St. Peter's, followed by the first Big Ten game that Saturday against Illinois.
