No. 7 Rowing Heads to Big Ten Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 17 Rutgers rowing begins championship season at the 2025 Big Ten Championships on Sat. and Sun., May 17 and 18 at Eagle Creek Park. For the first time, the Big Ten regatta will take place over two days with heats on Saturday and finals on Sunday.

Saturday's heats will be split into groups of five and six. The top three finishers from each heat will advance to the Grand Finals on Sunday, while the remaining five boats will compete in the Petite Finals.

The No. 7 Scarlet Knights, who have been nationally ranked all season, are joined by Big Ten opponents No. 2 Washington, No. 10 Michigan, No. 16 Indiana, No. 17 Ohio State, No. 23 USC, and No. 25 UCLA in the latest CRCA rankings.

Rutgers will enter seven point-scoring boats in the race for the Big Ten team championship title, which is awarded to the highest point total after the final round. The boats are weighted differently and are as follows for the 2025 Big Ten Championships:

Rutgers sent all eight of its boats to the grand finals at the Women's Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond on May 4 while earning seven medals in the championship-style event - including five gold medals. The results led to Rutgers' second team title at the annual Eastern Sprints (joining 2019). The Varsity 8, Varsity 4, 2nd Varsity 4, 3rd Varsity 4A, and 4th Varsity 8 all claimed victories in their grand final races, while the 2nd Varsity 8 and 3rd Varsity 8 both earned bronze on Sunday.

The Scarlet Knights won 13 races at the Big Ten Invitational on April 18-19 in Sarasota, Florida, and won the Doc Hosea Invitational on March 29. Rutgers has combined for seven Big Ten Boats of the Week awards in 2025.

Last time at the Big Ten Championships in 2024, Rutgers won three medals on Devil's Lake in Wisconsin, led by a gold medal performance by the 3rd Varsity 4. The Scarlet Knights matched their best Big Ten Championships finish with a third-place team result. Rutgers scored 137 points behind the 3V4's gold, a silver from the 2nd Varsity 8, and a bronze medal in the Varsity 4. The gold was the second in a row for the 3rd Varsity 4 at Big Tens and the Scarlet Knight's third overall boat championship at the conference regatta.
