PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball slugged three home runs and used dominant pitching to beat Rider by a score of 7-1 on Wednesday evening at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (25-24) took an early lead and never looked back against the Broncs (28-15) to cap off an undefeated midweek season at home.
Rutgers struck for a pair in the first to take immediate control of the game. Brennan Hyde led the inning off with his fifth home run of the season and third in the last five games to make it 1-0. Hyde now has hits in 11 straight games – including 10 straight since moving to the leadoff spot. After Trevor Cohen singled and stole second, Pablo Santos drove him in with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Ty Doucette scored in the third on a double play and Yomar Carreras made it 5-0 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Despite the Broncs getting on the board with a sac fly in the fifth, RU responded with a sac fly of its own in the bottom of the fifth to push the advantage to 6-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, Carreras launched his second home run of the game – one from each side of the plate for the switch-hitter – to give Rutgers the 7-1 advantage.
Andrew Rondini earned the start and was terrific for Rutgers, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
Dillon Ryan pitched a scoreless fourth and Charles Batista earned the win with a pair of scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, striking out three.
Matthew Cruz closed out the win on the mound, pitching scoreless eighth and ninth innings, allowing no hits and striking out two.
