No. 10 Florida State Gets Past Softball, 2-0 & 5-1

TALLAHASSE, Fla. – No. 10 Florida State got past Rutgers softball in both games of Saturday's doubleheader of the Unconquered Invitational.
In game one, tt was a 0-0 stalemate until the bottom of the seventh when the Seminoles used a two-run walk-off home run to top the Scarlet Knights 2-0. In game two, RU took an early 1-0 lead after their first at-bat, but Florida State came back with two runs in the bottom half en route to the 5-1 win.
Rutgers dropped to 9-9 on the year.
Game 1: #10 Flordia State 2, Rutgers 0
| STATISTICALLY SPEAKING |
- Junior Sam Rohwer was 1-for-2 with a walk, while senior Mia Mitchell and sophomore Jayla Fuller each went 1-fof-3.
- Sophomore Kelsey Hoekstra got the start, tossing 4.1 innings in holding FSU scoreless, while giving up four hits and four walks and striking out a pair of Seminoles. Classmate Kassandra Gewecke fell to 3-4 in the loss.
| THE RUNDOWN |
- Defensively, Rutgers out of a based loaded jam in the bottom of the first and second and gave up only one hit in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
- The Scarlet Knights loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but the side would be retired without Rutgers plating. With one out, Mia Mitchell singled to left, pinch-hitter Etta Garofalo walked and Siera Hoekstra was hit by a pitch to have all aboard. The Scarlet Knights, however, would be left stranded.
- Marin Heller led off the bottom of the seventh for the Seminoles with a walk and Jaysoni Beachum followed with a home run over the left field wall for the walk-off win.

Game 2: #10 Florida State 5, Rutgers 1
| STATISTICALLY SPEAKING |
- Sophomore Riley Hwang was 3-for-3 scoring RU's lone run.
- Freshman Makenna Coleman garnered the RBI on the bases-loaded walk that scored Hwang.
- Freshman Charleigh Schuettler was 2-for-3 with sophomore Kelsey Hoekstra and senior Siera Hoekstra each posting up hits.
- Junior Brooke Shifflett fell to 4-3 with the start, giving up two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work. Marley Caldwell and Kassandra Gewecke also saw time in the circle.
| THE RUNDOWN |
- Rutgers struck first as a bases-loaded walk put the Scarlet Knights onto the scoreboard in their first at-bat. Riley Hwang, Kelsey Hoekstra and Siera Hoekstra all singled to have the bases loaded. Makenna Coleman walked in Riley Hwang for the 1-0 lead.
- Florida State, however, came back with two runs in the bottom half of the first. Jaysoni Beachum walked, advanced to third on a double by Ashytn Danley and scored off Anna Hinde's sacrifice fly to right to knot the score at 1-1. Danley scored as Kennedy Harp followed with a single to shallow right to put FSU in front 2-1.
- The Seminoles added three more in the bottom of the fifth with a Danley RBI double to left center and Hinde home run to left for Florida State.

Rutgers softball opens up Big Ten play next weekend at Maryland. The Scarlet Knights will meet the Terps in College Park on March 6-8.
