EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The Rutgers tennis team (7-6, 0-3 B1G) defeated Cornell (6-6, 0-0 IVY), 4-0, Monday morning.
The win is the first against an Ivy League team at home since Feb. 15, 2020, when the team beat Penn, 4-3. The Scarlet Knights last Ivy League win came against Cornell on Feb. 17, 2024, 4-3.
"That was a great team victory," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "Cornell never gave in and really forced us to earn those singles wins. For the matches that didn't finish, those players were digging in to keep us alive. Zeynep did an excellent job to clinch the match in the third set. This is the momentum we needed heading into our home matches this weekend."
Doubles
Rutgers emerged with the doubles point after two exciting wins.
The top duo of Mai Nguyen and Zuzanna Frankowska recorded a 6-3 victory on the top court. The pair has compiled an 8-4 record together this spring.
Stella Schmitz and Naomi Karki also helped clinch the point with another 6-3 win in the third lineup spot.
Singles
Frankowska picked up a quick straight sets win (6-3, 6-1), at the No. 2 spot to give RU a 2-0 edge.
Savannah Cohen kept up her strong play with a dominant win on the final court for her first Big Ten victory, 6-3, 6-0. The freshman leads the team with seven singles victories so far this spring.
The remaining four matches all went to third sets, but Zeynep Ilker came up clutch to clinch the match at the fourth spot, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
