Softball's Game Two Come Back Against Spartans Falls Short
Apr 11 | Softball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers softball dropped game two of the weekend series with Michigan State, 9-6, as the Scarlet Knights overcame a six-run deficit and headed into the seventh tied at 6-6.
The Spartans took a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Scarlet Knights chipped away thanks in part to Sam Roher's team-leading 12th home run of the season and Eva Garofalo's first career home run.
RU and MSU were knotted at 4-4 after four innings but the Spartans used a three-run home run from Kirsten Caravaca to go back in front and even the series at 1-1.
Michigan State 9, Rutgers 6
| STATISTICALLY SPEAKING |
- Rutgers captured multiple home runs in a contest for the 12th time this season and the fourth straight contest. Junior Sam Rohwer, who belted number 12 on the season with a three-run blast, has had three straight games going over the wall. Freshman Eva Garofalo, meanwhile, became the 15th Scarlet Knight of the season to record a home run with her two-run shot, scoring her twin sister, Etta. With the two long balls, RU now has 51 home runs on the year and is four away from breaking the school record of 54 set in 2019.
- Senior Mia Mitchell added an RBI double.
- Junior Brooke Shifflett dropped to 6-7 on the year in the start. Freshman Marley Caldwell tossed 5.1 innings of relief, giving up two runs on four hits and one walk.
| THE RUNDOWN |
- Michigan State had a big first at-bat with five hits leading to six runs. With the bases loaded, Kendall Smiley knocked in the first run of the day on a single to left, and scoring continued with a two-run single from Natalia Kenyatta and a two-run double by Payton Conroy.
- Mia Mitchell put RU on the board in the bottom half. Riley Hwang singled up the middle and used her speed to score from first on Mia Mitchell's double to left center.
- Sam Rohwer cut the deficit further the next inning. After a Hailey Stripling single and Jayla Fuller reaching base after being hit by a pitch, Rohwer homered out to left for RU to trail 6-4.
- Eva Garofalo made it a 6-6 ball game in the fourth. Her sister, Etta Garofalo, walked to lead off and two batters later Eva took a full count down the left field line and onto the hill to tie the game.
- The score remained even until the top of the seventh. With two aboard, Kirsten Caravaca went out of the park to left center, putting her Spartans back in the lead for good.
