
Baseball Drops Game One at No. 17 USC

LOS ANGELES – Rutgers baseball fell in game one to No. 17 USC by a score of 5-1 on Friday night at Dedeaux Field.
The Scarlet Knights (22-24, 9-13) kept it close for the majority of the game, but the Trojans (35-12, 17-8) used a three-run seventh to avoid an upset.
Zack Konstantinovsky provided a quality start on the mound, going six-plus innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.
After USC scored a pair in the fifth on two RBI singles, RU scored in the top of the sixth when Gabriel Rivera doubled into the gap to score Jack Sweeney and make it a one-run game.
After a leadoff triple in the seventh, the Scarlet Knights went to the bullpen the Trojans would rally for three runs to put the game out of reach at 5-1.
Chase Krewson provided the third and final hit for Rutgers on a single later in the game.
The Scarlet Knight pitchers were effective outside the seventh, totaling 11 strikeouts to just two walks. Finn Haines retired the lone batter he faced, and Matthew Cruz struck out one in a scoreless ninth
Game two between Rutgers and USC is set for 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.
