Fraticelli’s Hat Trick Pushes No. 17 Field Hockey to Win at Wagner

RU outshot Wagner 18-5 for the game and had a 6-4 advantage on penalty corners. Talia Schenck had two assists for Rutgers, with Anna Cogdell, Sophie Kuiper and Eden Doucelin each adding one assist.
Rutgers scored first near the end of the first quarter. For the second straight game, Olivia Fraticelli was RU's initial goal scorer. RU earned a penalty corner and after a shot from the top, the ball found Fraticelli in space to goalkeeper's left. She lifted in a shot for the early 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the contest.
RU added two more goals in the second quarter. It was Fraticelli again with the next goal. RU started the offense off a quick restart, working the ball to Sophie Kuiper on the left side. She sent a great pass across the circle, where Fraticelli had the tap-in from her spot on the back post.
The third RU goal in the opening half came off a penalty corner. Laura Loycke was the inserter, and sent the ball to the top. Anna Cogdell sent the ball in for a 3-0 lead.
Wagner next scored a goal in the opening minute of the second half. The Seahawks earned a penalty corner, and despite an initial strong save by Emily Nicholls, the ball stayed loose in front and was eventually poked in by the home team.
Fraticelli's third goal came off of a great buildup for RU. The Scarlet Knights reversed sides of the field through their backs, sent a series of passes up the left side, and found Fraticelli alone 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper for the score.
Then it was Frederique Vernooij with a fancy move. She utilized some fancy stick-handling out of the air to put RU ahead 5-1. Julia Vinas Nieto had the sixth goal for RU. Wagner couldn't cover up the initial RU shot and she put it home for the sophomore's second career goal. Olivia Stazi scored her first career goal late in the fourth quarter, with Talia Schenck leading a transition break, finding Stazi open in front for her first career score.
Rutgers defeated Wagner for the second straight season, also doing so last year in the inaugural meeting between the two programs. RU now stands at 1-1 following the first two games of the season, dropping the opener Friday to No. 18 Monmouth. Five of the first six opponents to start the year for RU are in the top-20, with the next four upcoming foes ranked in the top-11 currently.
