Field Hockey Trounces Albany in 7-2 Win
Sep 18 | Field Hockey
Rutgers matched a season-high with seven goals in the game. The Scarlet Knights saw three scores from Laura Loycke, two goals from Olivia Fraticelli and goals from Anna Cogdell and Emma Uprichard.
Rutgers outshot Albany 23-6 on the game. Emilly Nicholls made four saves for RU.
RU's goal came just five minutes into the game. The Scarlet Knights forced a turnover on Albany's end of the field as Frederique Vernooij made the play and turned it into a 3-on-2 rush against the defense. Sending a pass to Talia Schenck, she took it around the defense, and Laura Loycke stepped up for a hard shot to give RU the 1-0 lead.
Albany had an answer shortly after, capitalizing after gaining the game's first penalty corner. The ball was sent into space near the top of the circle, where Albany's Quinty Reumer launched in a high shot into the net to equalize the score at 1-1.
A similar situation led to RU's second goal, also coming in the first quarter. Again RU took advantage of an Albany turnover in their defensive end, as Olivia Fraticelli made the play to gain possession. This led to a 3-on-1 break for RU, and while the initial shot was saved, Emma Uprichard raced to the ball, gathering it in space, and sending home a long shot from the top of the arc to retake the lead. Rutgers kept high pressure on the Great Danes throughout the opening quarter, with seven shots in the first frame, leading to a 2-1 lead.
Rutgers third goal came at the five minute mark of the second quarter. For the third time, it was the pressure to take the ball away from the defense leading to a player advantage in the offensive circle. On this goal, Olvia Fraticelli finished in front off an assist from Olivia Stazi, taking a 3-1 lead.
Albany answered just under a minute later. Again capitalizing on a corner, the Great Danes cut the lead to 3-2.
In the final two minutes of the half, RU added a fourth tally. This time, the offense came from a quick restart, with the visitors pushing the ball into the circle. A shot from the top from Frederique Vernooij was redirected in front of the goal by Laura Loycke, and RU took a 4-2 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, RU had a three goal burst in a span of under four minutes. The scoring restarted with Anna Cogdell firing home a shot off a corner. Just 24 seconds later, Olivia Fraticelli beat the defense to score RU's sixth goal. Then to close the quarter, it was Laura Loycke with a finish in front that gave the Scarlet Knights a 7-2 lead. Ā
