Calvert’s Brace Leads Women’s Soccer to Win Over Princeton

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's soccer used a brace from true freshman Lilia Calvert en route to a 4-2 victory over Princeton on Sunday at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights (1-1-3) scored three goals in the second half, including Calvert's game-winner with under seven minutes left, to defeat the Tigers (2-3-0) and earn their first win of the season.
While the past few matches have seen RU knocking on the door of a win, the Scarlet Knights broke through with a four-goal outburst, including two in the final seven minutes, to top their in-state rival.
Just over two minutes in, Gabriela Gil was taken down in the box and earned a penalty kick. While her PK was saved, Ashley Baran was there to slot home the rebound and give RU a 1-0 lead.
Princeton controlled play for the rest of the half and ultimately earned a penalty kick of its own 25 minutes in, which the visitors converted to tie the game at 1-1.
With the score tied at halftime, the Scarlet Knights flipped the match in the second half. They outshot the Tigers, 8-5, in the final 45 minutes and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
In the 71st minute, Sophia Stiles gave RU the lead off a corner kick when Lily Ann Phillips' cross bounced to the back post and Stiles kicked it home.
Princeton had a quick answer, scoring on a shot from distance in the 78th minute to tie the game.
With Rutgers searching for a winner late, Marian Dunne controlled the ball in midfield and found Calvert making a run up the left side. Calvert slotted it into the far corner to make it 3-2.
Calvert doubled the lead minutes later after a pair of long passes from Jayme Malanda and Amanda Thornton set her up on another fast break.
In net, Olivia Bodmer made three saves to bring her career total to 234, moving her into sixth all-time in program history.
