Rutgers Ends Play at Princeton Invitational

After losing her opening match in Flight A singles, junior Kaitlin Link (Ontario/Toronto, Canada) rebounded to reach the finals of the consolation bracket. She lost in the finals to Columbia’s Condit, 6-0, 6-1.
In an all-Rutgers final round, junior Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) captured
her bracket’s consolation championship, downing senior Carissa Sommerlad
(Bradley Beach, NJ), 6-5 (7),
6-4.
Freshman Alina Balasa (East Brunsiwick, NJ) won the consolation title in her singles draw, beating her teammate sophomore Oksana Manoukian (Old Tappan, NJ) in the final round, 6-1, 6-3. After two tough losses, freshman Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) rebounded to beat Lehigh’s Jamie Fass, 6-4, 6-1.
Senior Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) struggled in the tournament, losing three matches in Flight A singles competition. Freshman Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) was forced to retire in her first singles match after spraining her ankle.
The doubles team of Hellier and Shmakova finished second in the B doubles draw,
winning two of three matches. Sommerlad and Weckstein registered a fourth place
showing in the B flight after losing to Harvard’s Ashley Hyotte and Pillinger,
8-1. Manoukian and Link downed Harvard’s Elizabeth Gass and Christina
Chen, 8-4, to capture third place in the D doubles draw.
The doubles team of Balasa and Markowtiz reached the final round of the Flight
C doubles competition, but could not play due to Markowitz’s injury. They
finished second in the draw.
The women will return to action, Fri.-Sun., Oct. 12-14 competing at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the National Tennis Center in Forest Hills, NY.
