Dujsic Wins Singles Title at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, CT – Freshmen Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) enjoyed the most successful weekend of her young career, winning the Flight C singles title at the Quinnipiac Invitational for the Rutgers women’s tennis team.
Dujsic knocked off Seton Hall’s Nadja Sein in dramatic fashion, winning the first set 7-6 (4) in a tiebreaker and dropping the second, 6-0. In the third-set super tiebreaker, she held on for a 10-7 win and the first singles title of her career. Prior to reaching the finals, Dujsic won straight-set matches in the quarterfinals and semifinals. She defeated Iva Gyurgina of Seton Hall in the first round, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.
“Anela showed tremendous progress this weekend,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “She is a fierce competitor and winner, and both of those qualities really showed.”
In doubles, Dujsic and Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) finished second in Flight B doubles, advancing to the finals on the strength of an 8-0 first round victory and marathon 9-7 triumph in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Dujsic and Balasa earned an 8-3 decision.
Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) advanced to the final of Flight A singles with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory over Viviana Figueroroa of Seton Hall. She lost a hard-fought decision in the finals, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. Also in Flight A singles, freshmen Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) advanced to the semifinals, winning a pair of straight-set matches in the first round and quarterfinals.
“Jill played hard and is a great role model for our younger players,” said Bucca. “Katrina’s play was also very encouraging, and I feel we have a team right now that is united towards one goal and one purpose.”
The Scarlet Knights were represented in Flight A doubles by Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) and Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ). Markowitz and freshmen Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) also competed in Flight A doubles, falling in the first round, 8-6. In Flight D singles, freshmen Michaela Brailsford (Auburndale, MA) lost in the first round, 7-5, 6-3.
Rutgers returns to action Friday through Sunday, Oct. 8-10, at the annual USTA Invitational in Forest Hills, NY, which is regarded as the premiere fall tournament on the East Coast
