Women's Lacrosse Edges Boston College In Overtime, 11-10
Mar 11 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior goalkeeper Lyndsey Feldmen (Ft. Myers, FL) made a save with two seconds left in overtime to help preserve Rutgers’ 11-10 come-from-behind victory over Boston College in BIG EAST women’s lacrosse action on Friday in Piscataway. With the win, RU improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Eagles (1-1, 0-1) had taken a 9-6 lead with 9:40 remaining in the second half, but Rutgers responded by scoring the final three goals of regulation to forge a 9-9 tie. Emily Widrick (Carthage, NY) started the rally with an unassisted goal, followed less than a minute later by freshman Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ), who beat BC goalie Tara McKennett to make the score 9-8.
The Scarlet Knights were able to score the equalizer when Widrick converted a free-position shot. For Widrick, it was her third goal of the game. The Scarlet Knights’ defense successfully snuffed out Boston College’s final scoring opportunity, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra session, leading scorer Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) netted her seventh goal of the season to give RU a 10-9 edge with just over four minutes remaining. Boston College was able to score the tying goal, but Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) netted what turned out to be the game-winning goal just 29 seconds later.
With time running out in the overtime session, Feldman stopped a shot from point-blank range to seal the victory. The senior goalkeeper finished with 11 saves.
Rutgers’ offensive effort was led by Widrick and Shomo, who each notched three goals. Batiuk, Farewell, Sara Soden (Monroe Twp., NJ), Kathleen Holly (Pottstown, PA) and Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) each scored singles goals. Boston College was led by Susie Breaznell, who scored a game-high four goals. Boston College outshot Rutgers 25-24, but the Scarlet Knights forced 17 turnovers and scooped up 20 groundballs.
Rutgers heads south for its annual Spring Break trip to Orlando, FL, where the Scarlet Knights will face No. 14 Yale on Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m.
