EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 22 Rutgers women's lacrosse (10-6, 4-3) lost at No. 2 Northwestern (11-3, 6-1), 18-6, on Wednesday night at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium. Sophomore Caroline Ling produced three goals, including the 100th point of her career, in the loss to the Wildcats.
It marked the 11th game with three or more goals for Ling this season. The Springboro, Ohio, native is now up to 53 goals and 28 assists this season, with her 81 points second in the Big Ten Conference this spring. Northwestern, which entered the night ranked No. 2 in the country and on a six-game winning streak, used a 14-9 advantage on the draw and 32 shots to RU's 27 to secure its sixth Big Ten win of the season. Rutgers has now faced the No. 1 (Maryland) and No. 2 programs in the country and five of the top 12 teams in this week's IWLCA Coaches Poll heading into the postseason.
Ling finished with a team-high three goals, while junior Payton Tini, sophomore Delainey Sutley and freshman Annalise Messina all added scores. Senior Katie Buck added a team-high five draw controls. Sophomore Maddie Miceli caused a career-high four turnovers along with four ground balls.
The Wildcats scored the first four goals of the night before Tini drilled an unassisted strike with 45 seconds left in the quarter for Rutgers' first goal of the night. Ling added her first of the game late in the second quarter, as Northwestern took an 8-2 lead into the locker room.
NU used a 6-2 scoring run in the third quarter to put the game all but out of reach, but the Scarlet Knights fought down the stretch. Ling took a pass from Sutley and found the back of the cage for her 100th career point, and followed with a highlight behind-the-back finish five minutes later for her third goal of the night.
