Rutgers Defeats Connecticut, 5-2

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s tennis team snapped a three-game losing streak with a convincing 5-2 victory over BIG EAST rival Connecticut on Tuesday in Piscataway. With the win, the Scarlet Knights improve to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Rutgers was boosted by the return of junior Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ), and managed to take two out of three doubles matches to earn the team doubles point. Senior Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) won a tight match at third doubles, 9-7, while junior Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and freshman Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) earned a 8-3 victory at second doubles.
In the singles matches, freshman Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) held of for a three-set win over Whitney Simcik, while Balasa, Magomedova and Edelschein all won in straight sets.
“This was a good win for us to regain our confidence,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “We’re heading into the most important stretch on our schedule against BIG EAST teams, so hopefully the momentum we gained with this win can carry over.”
The Scarlet Knights will take on Pittsburgh this Saturday, April 2, and West Virginia on Sunday, April 3, as part of a two-match conference road trip.
