Rutgers Drops 14-9 Decision at No. 13 Syracuse
Apr 22 | Women's Lacrosse
SYRACUSE, NY – After nearly two weeks off, the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team returned to action on Friday afternoon, dropping a 14-9 decision at No. 13 Syracuse inside the Carrier Dome. The Scarlet Knights fall to 4-8 overall on the season and 1-4 in the BIG EAST, while the Orange improve to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Syracuse built a 4-0 lead out of the gates before freshman Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ) scored for Rutgers to end the Orange run. However, SU opened up a six-goal lead with the next three goals to make it 7-1 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Rutgers and Syracuse closed the half with two goals apiece to make it 9-3 at the half. Shomo added her second score of the half off an assist from fellow freshman Courtney Wernick (Baltimore, MD) before sophomore Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) scored a free-position goal.
Shomo opened the second period with her third score of the contest, but Syracuse scored the next three goals to open a 12-4 advantage midway through the final half.
The Scarlet Knights made a furious comeback scoring five of the final seven goals of the game, but it was not enough as the Orange escaped with the 14-9 victory. Sophomore Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) took a Batiuk feed to score her sixth goal of the season.
Batiuk followed a Syracuse goal with a personal three-goal run to make it 13-8. After the Rutgers defense kept the Orange scoreless for more than 10 minutes, SU scored its final goal of the contest with two minutes remaining. The freshmen duo of Rachel Bruce (Arnold, MD) and Shirah Hamor (Pennington, NJ) connected for the final goal of the game with Bruce putting home the score with 1:38 remaining.
Syracuse held a 36-24 edge over Rutgers in shots, while both teams totaled 13 ground balls in the match.
Senior goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made 15 saves in goal for RU. Syracuse’s Jen Kasel made seven stops.
With four goals and an assist on Friday, Batiuk now has 47 points (37 goals, 10 assists) this season, equaling her total in 15 games last season. She is just six points shy of becoming the 15th member of the Rutgers 100-point club.
Fellow sophomore Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) registered three ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers against Syracuse. She entered the week as the BIG EAST leader in both categories during league games.
The Scarlet Knights return home to play No. 19 Ohio State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
